Fuel Surcharge (Inland)

Due to recent increases in fuel price, a majority of inland carriers have started tacking on fuel surcharges to all shipments. The fuel surcharge is commonly calculated as a percentage of freight charges, and it's usually not added to charges for optional services. Since fuel prices are constantly fluctating, the fuel surcharge allow carriers to offset the cost of fuel without having to modify their base tariff on a regular basis (a logistical nightmare!).

Most inland carriers base their fuel surcharge on an index known as the the U.S. National Average On-Highway Diesel Price. This index is announced every Monday by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Any change to the index that affects the carrier's fuel surcharge is usually implemented shortly after the DOE's announcement (anywhere from a day to a week).

Due to the constant fluctation of fuel prices, the fuel surcharge quoted by our system is only applicable at the time of the quote and is subject to change without notice.
